Black & Veatch, a global player in critical human infrastructure solutions, will serve as the Owner’s Engineer (OE) and Technical Advisor (TA) for two battery energy storage solution (BESS) projects in the United Kingdom.

These projects will have a combined storage capacity of up to 200MWh. The company was selected by two UK-based firms to provide technical expertise and independent oversight.

Supporting the UK’s Net-Zero Ambitions

In 2023, the UK government set ambitious emissions reduction targets, aiming to achieve ‘net-zero’ by 2050.

A statement from the Prime Minister’s office stated, “The UK is home to abundant natural resources for renewable energy and a pioneering industry delivering the latest advancements in clean tech. Our clean energy mission will harness these opportunities to deliver change, and the opportunity for growth and good jobs in clean tech”.

As the transition to renewable energy accelerates, the need for grid resiliency becomes more urgent. Battery energy storage systems ensure consistent power. They are essential during fluctuations in renewable energy generation.

Black & Veatch’s Expertise in Energy Storage

With over 21GWh of global energy storage project experience, Black & Veatch brings extensive knowledge to these UK projects.

Robbie Gibson, Associate Vice President at Black & Veatch, said, “Integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into UK utilities boosts grid resilience, optimises performance, and supports sustainable, cost-effective energy.”

Delivering Technical Oversight and Support

As the OE and TA, Black & Veatch will act as an independent advocate throughout the project lifecycle. The company will review and provide technical comments on all contractor deliverables. It will also offer technical advice, monitor construction, and track the schedule. This comprehensive oversight ensures the projects remain on track and meet technical and regulatory standards.

Proven Track Record in Energy Projects

Black & Veatch has a strong track record in energy storage projects across Europe and the Middle East. The company has served as Technical Advisor, Owner’s Engineer, and Due Diligence provider. These roles covered projects with a combined energy capacity of 4GWh.

According to the press release, Black & Veatch’s extensive experience positions the company to deliver high-quality outcomes for new UK battery storage initiatives.
