Praj Industries has entered into a strategic agreement with Paraguay-based renewable energy company Enersur S.A. to support the development and phased execution of an integrated biorefinery project in Paraguay. The collaboration marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy initiatives in Latin America.
Agreement Signed During Presidential Visit to India
Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios formalised the partnership during his official visit to India from June 2–4, 2025. President Peña, accompanied by ministers and business delegates, signed the agreement, underscoring the high-level commitment to renewable energy cooperation between the two nations.
A Comprehensive Biorefinery for Diverse Outputs
The proposed biorefinery aims to produce ethanol as its primary output, alongside several high-value by-products such as:
- Distillers Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS)
- Corn oil
- Biogas
- Biobitumen
- Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)
The diverse product slate supports both energy security and economic development in Paraguay.
Building on Earlier Ethanol Plant Collaboration
The agreement builds on a previous contract awarded by Enersur to Praj for a 600 m³/day anhydrous ethanol plant in Canindeyú, Paraguay. The plant, currently under development, will use corn as feedstock and is slated for commissioning by October 2026.
Praj’s scope of work includes:
- Licensing of proprietary process technology
- Engineering design
- Supply of core process equipment
- On-site project supervision
Driving Rural Development and Energy Independence
According to a company statement, the ethanol facility will contribute significantly to Paraguay’s rural development goals by promoting clean energy solutions and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The project is expected to generate substantial direct and indirect employment, boosting the local economy and supporting sustainable growth in the region.
A Step Forward in Bioeconomy Collaboration
The partnership reinforces Praj Industries’ growing global footprint in the bioeconomy sector and highlights Paraguay’s commitment to adopting cleaner, renewable energy alternatives. According to businessworld.in, as the world accelerates its transition toward low-carbon technologies, collaborations like this pave the way for impactful, scalable solutions.
