Birla Carbon received gold-level recognition from the International Carbon Black Association (ICBA) for thirteen of its sites under the ICBA’s Safety Performance Recognition Program—the highest safety accolade the association confers. The awards recognize exceptional safety standards maintained across 11 manufacturing units and 2 R&D centers spanning North and South America, Europe, and Asia.
A Testament to a Strong Global Safety Culture
John Loudermilk, President and CEO of Birla Carbon, stated, “Safety is a fundamental priority at Birla Carbon – embedded in every process, every policy, and every plant. These recognitions from the ICBA demonstrate a strong safety culture that our teams have established and maintained globally. I commend our teams for their commitment and thank the ICBA for encouraging industry-wide excellence.”
The achievement highlights the company’s ongoing dedication to protecting its workforce and fostering a culture where safety is deeply rooted in its purpose to ‘Share the Strength.’
Recognized Sites Span Global Operations
The thirteen awarded Birla Carbon sites include:
*Technical Centers: Marietta (USA), Taloja (India)
*Manufacturing Facilities: Camaçari, Cubatão (Brazil), Egypt, Gummidipoondi, Hickok (USA), Hungary, Italy, Jining (China), Renukoot (India), Spain, and Thailand
Understanding the ICBA Safety Award Tiers
The ICBA Safety Performance Recognition Program evaluates facilities based on stringent, tiered criteria:
Bronze Award: Given to sites with zero Lost Work Day (LWD) cases for employees during the 2024 calendar year.
Silver Award: Conferred to sites that meet Bronze-level standards and achieve zero medical aid or OSHA recordable incidents. They must also have no major fire or property damage, and no safety-related regulatory citations. Alternatively, sites can qualify by showing over 50% improvement across these metrics from the previous year.
Gold Award: Reserved for sites that fulfill Silver-level criteria and either maintain a certified safety/environmental management system (e.g., ISO 45001, ISO 14001, OSHA VPP), or operate a company-specific safety system with over three years of zero LWD cases. Birla Carbon’s Gold Awards underscore its robust safety systems and consistent performance over time.
Setting the Industry Benchmark
This is the highest number of Gold and total awards received by any of the six member companies of the ICBA. Birla Carbon’s recognition sets a new benchmark within the industry, affirming its leadership in health, safety, and sustainability standards.
Elevating Industry-Wide Safety Standards
Beyond individual accolades, the ICBA’s awards play a crucial role in raising the bar for safety across the carbon black sector. The program requires companies to submit verified safety data. It rewards top performers, driving continuous improvement, regulatory compliance, and industry-wide accountability.
Reinforcing Sustainability and Operational Excellence
The milestone also reflects Birla Carbon’s broader commitment to sustainability. It emphasizes a strong focus on operational excellence, employee well-being, and responsible leadership. According to the press release, the company continuously invests in its safety culture. This commitment helps build a safer, more resilient carbon black industry for the future.
