Danish multinational Grundfos, a global player in advanced water and climate solutions, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Newterra, a U.S.-based provider of modular water and wastewater treatment systems. The Pittsburgh-headquartered company, currently owned by Chicago-based private equity firm Frontenac, brings significant industrial and municipal water treatment expertise to Grundfos’ growing portfolio.
The acquisition marks another milestone in Grundfos’ ongoing strategy to expand its water treatment capabilities and presence across North America. It follows a string of successful acquisitions since 2020 aimed at building a robust water treatment platform.
Accelerating Growth in the U.S. and Canada
Grundfos has set an ambitious target to double its U.S. business by 2030, and this acquisition is seen as a pivotal step in that journey. The company recently announced plans to enhance its manufacturing footprint in the U.S. with a new facility in Brookshire, Texas, where its American headquarters is located.
“This acquisition is a natural next step towards realizing our ambitious growth plans for the U.S.,” said Inge Delobelle, Executive Vice President and Divisional CEO of Grundfos’ Industry Division. “By strengthening our capabilities in water treatment, Grundfos and our customers can make an even bigger positive impact on the world’s water and climate challenges,” Delobelle added.
Complementary Strengths and Shared Vision
Newterra specializes in designing, engineering, manufacturing, and servicing modular water and wastewater treatment systems. Their technology and market reach complement Grundfos’ existing offerings, enabling the combined entity to offer a broader range of integrated solutions to industrial and municipal customers.
Delobelle added, “Newterra’s capabilities perfectly fit our strategy as we incorporate them into our operations. Together, we’ll strengthen our position to meet the growing demand for innovative, sustainable water treatment solutions.”
Positive Synergy and Shared Sustainability Goals
Newterra’s CEO, Kevin Cassidy said, “We are very excited about joining Grundfos. Our visions align, especially in our shared focus on delivering sustainable solutions to our customers. With Grundfos’ strengths and global reach, we’re confident we can create even greater value for both our customers and the environment.”
A Growing Water Treatment Powerhouse
Once Grundfos finalizes the acquisition, its water treatment division will include more than 1,500 highly skilled professionals across Europe and North America and will generate revenues exceeding USD 350 million. The company continues to actively pursue new growth opportunities in water treatment to expand its influence in solving global water challenges.
Closing Timeline and Next Steps
The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close in the second half of 2025. As per the press release, until the process is complete, Grundfos and Newterra will continue to operate independently. This strategic move strengthens Grundfos’ position as a global leader in water solutions. It also underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and long-term growth in key markets.
