ISMA Hails Government’s Early Twenty Percent Ethanol Blending Milestone

The Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) congratulated the government on achieving the 20% ethanol blending target with petrol five years ahead of the 2030 deadline. The landmark achievement reflects the government’s commitment to energy security, environmental sustainability, and rural prosperity.

Rapid Growth in a Decade

India’s ethanol journey began with a modest 1.5% blending initiative in 2014. By 2025, blending has surged to 20%, marking extraordinary progress in just over a decade.

*Blended volume growth: from 38 crore litres in 2014 to 661.1 crore litres as of June 2025.

*CO₂ emissions cut: 698 lakh tonnes avoided

*Farmer payouts: ₹1.18 lakh crore disbursed

*Distillery payments: ₹1.96 lakh crore made

*Foreign exchange savings: ₹1.36 lakh crore preserved

Sugar Industry Powers Ethanol Economy

India’s ethanol production success stems from its agricultural strength, with the sugar industry playing a pivotal role. Ethanol sourced from sugarcane juice, B-heavy molasses, and by-products has empowered farmers, strengthened rural economies, and supplied the nation with clean, sustainable fuel.

Leadership Praised

Deepak Ballani, Director General of ISMA, said, “This achievement is a monumental leap for India’s energy independence and rural prosperity. It’s a source of immense pride for every farmer, mill, and stakeholder in the ethanol ecosystem. The government’s clear policies and visionary leadership made this success possible five years ahead of schedule, setting a powerful precedent for India’s green energy future.”

Commitment to a Sustainable Future

ISMA reaffirmed its dedication to supporting the government’s energy and agricultural goals. As per the press release, the association remains committed to expanding ethanol production and advancing India’s clean fuel movement, driving the nation towards greater sustainability and self-reliance.
