India positions itself as a leading global player in the green hydrogen market. At the FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister Shripad Naik outlined the government’s ambitious goal to capture 10% of global demand, projected to exceed 100 million metric tonnes by 2030.
Scaling Up Industrial Capacity
In a significant industrial move, the government has awarded 3,000 megawatts of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies. This initiative is expected to accelerate domestic production and reduce reliance on imports. Additionally, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, 19 companies have secured production capacity totaling 862,000 tonnes annually. According to Minister Naik, the ultimate aim is to transform India into both a major producer and a leading exporter of green hydrogen.
Renewable Energy Driving the Mission
India’s robust renewable energy infrastructure is a cornerstone of this transformation. By June 2025, the country achieved 237 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, powered by solar, wind, and hydroelectric projects. Together with nuclear power, non-fossil fuels now contribute over half of India’s installed energy capacity, meeting national clean energy commitments ahead of schedule.
Industry Leaders Applaud Policy Momentum
The private sector has strongly endorsed the government’s efforts. Rajat Seksaria, Chair of the FICCI Green Hydrogen Committee, praised measures such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the world’s first green ammonia auction, noting their role in driving market demand and investor confidence. Adding to this momentum, Vipul Tuli of FICCI emphasized that green hydrogen has achieved price parity with blue hydrogen in international markets—a milestone that boosts its commercial viability and accelerates adoption.
Strengthening Global Cooperation
International collaboration is also gathering pace. The European Union Delegation to India announced the creation of a Hydrogen Task Force, underscoring Europe’s commitment to bilateral cooperation in advancing hydrogen technologies. Meanwhile, across 15 Indian states, dedicated green hydrogen policies are under active development, ensuring that momentum is not only maintained but also broadened across the country.
Towards a Global Hydrogen Leadership
As reported by devdiscourse.com, with supportive policies, expanding industrial capacity, and global partnerships, India is rapidly positioning itself as a hub for green hydrogen production and innovation. The nation’s progress signals its readiness to drive the global transition to clean energy while opening new opportunities for economic growth and sustainable development.
