The ONGC Energy Centre Trust (OECT), the research and development arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC), has signed a formal agreement with Engineers India Limited (EIL) to establish a helium recovery demonstration plant at ONGC’s Kuthalam gas collection station in the Cauvery Asset, Tamil Nadu.
Comprehensive Project Scope
Advanced Technology for High-Purity Helium
The plant will utilize a technology package developed by CSIR–Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR-IIP) to recover Grade-A Helium of 99.995% purity from natural gas. Designed to process 750 Nm³/hr of natural gas, the facility can also operate at up to 110% of its design capacity. Valued at ₹39.42 crore (plus GST), the project is scheduled for completion within 18 months.
Strategic Resource for India’s Future
Helium is a critical resource vital for space exploration, semiconductor manufacturing, cryogenics, fibre optics, and medical technologies. Currently, India relies entirely on imports to meet its demand. Developing indigenous helium recovery capacity is therefore strategically important for the nation’s technological advancement and energy security.
Strengthening Atmanirbhar Bharat
The helium recovery demonstration plant represents a major milestone in ONGC’s journey to build domestic capabilities in high-value gases. The initiative directly supports the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, while enhancing India’s long-term energy and technology security.
A First-of-its-Kind Collaboration
As per the company press release, OECT brings research strengths while EIL contributes engineering and execution expertise. Together, this partnership will deliver India’s first helium recovery plant. The project reinforces ONGC’s commitment to “Energy Now and Next.” It also showcases how cutting-edge research translates into industrial application for national benefit.
