Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) has inaugurated the Centre of Excellence in Analytical Pyrolysis (CoE-AnPy), a cutting-edge facility created in collaboration with Frontier Laboratories Ltd., Japan. This state-of-the-art centre aims to accelerate polymer science research, foster interdisciplinary learning, and strengthen industry-academia engagement in India.
A Strategic Partnership for Polymer Innovation
The collaboration was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SVU and Frontier Laboratories Ltd. The CoE-AnPy will address critical scientific and societal challenges related to natural and synthetic polymers, focusing on sustainability, microplastics, and waste plastic management. Samir Somaiya, Chancellor of SVU, and Dr. Atsushi Watanabe, Ichi, President of Frontier Laboratories Ltd., Japan, jointly inaugurated the centre.
Equipped with World-Class Technology
The CoE-AnPy boasts Frontier Laboratories’ advanced Pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) instruments, including:
*Multi-shot pyrolyser
*Selective sampler
*Cryogenic mill
*Microjet cryotrap
These tools enable high-throughput polymer analysis, structural characterisation, and degradation studies with minimal sample preparation. This infrastructure will significantly enhance the ability to conduct precise and rapid polymer research.
Hands-On Training for Future Researchers
To ensure optimal utilisation of these sophisticated instruments, Frontier Laboratories experts, along with Shimadzu India Private Ltd., will deliver intensive training programs for SVU researchers. This includes:
*A one-week program at IIT Madras
*Three days of on-site instruction at SVU
Such initiatives will empower faculty and students to master advanced analytical techniques, reinforcing SVU’s commitment to cutting-edge education and research.
Voices from the Leaders
Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor, SVU, emphasized, “The Centre of Excellence in Analytical Pyrolysis is a key part of our vision to build world-class research facilities and foster international collaborations. With Frontier Laboratories, our students and faculty can now explore cutting-edge polymer research and tackle challenges like microplastics while strengthening industry and academic partnerships.”
Dr. Atsushi Watanabe, Ichi, President, Frontier Laboratories Ltd., Japan, noted, “Pyrolysis techniques have existed since the 1950s and 60s, but were often overlooked in favour of methods like FTIR. Today, with rising environmental concerns such as microplastics and plastic waste, pyrolysis emerges as a powerful tool to address these real-world problems. We believe this Centre will not only advance polymer research in India but also deliver solutions to global environmental challenges.”
Driving Research, Sustainability, and Innovation
Beyond infrastructure and training, the CoE-AnPy will produce technical notes, joint research publications, and industry-driven solutions. This initiative underscores SVU’s mission to develop skilled researchers and foster innovation. It also aims to strengthen industry-academia collaboration in advanced polymer characterisation.
As per the press release, Somaiya Vidyavihar University has established a world-class research hub that sets a new benchmark in polymer science education and innovation in India. This initiative empowers researchers to develop sustainable solutions and drive industrial transformation.
