MSU Experts Appointed as Scientific Advisers to India’s Patent Office

Two experts from Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) have earned a prestigious spot on the Roll of Scientific Advisers maintained by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Appointments Under the Patents Act

The appointments, made under Section 115 of the Patents Act, 1970, and Rule 103 of the Patents Rules, 2003, position them among a select group of professionals entrusted with guiding India’s patent system. These advisers provide independent technical expertise on complex patent matters across diverse domains, including biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering, and electrical sciences.

Who Are the Appointed Experts?

The newly appointed advisers include Prof. Bhalchandra Bhanage, the new Vice-Chancellor of MSU. Dr. Prashant Ravan Murumkar, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy, is the other appointee.

Academic and Professional Excellence

Prof. Bhanage holds an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Pune and a PhD from the National Chemical Laboratory. Before joining MSU, he served as Head of Chemistry at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai. There, he built a reputation for excellence in research and academics.

Dr. Murumkar, with an MPharm and PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, also holds a diploma in patent law. He has 10 patents to his credit, covering innovative therapeutics for tuberculosis, cancer, malaria, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease.
