Engineers India Limited (EIL) successfully achieved the mechanical completion of the prestigious bio-refinery project of Assam Bio Ethanol Private Limited (ABEPL) at Numaligarh, Assam.

A Landmark in Green Energy Infrastructure

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to produce:

*49,000 TPA of bioethanol

*11,000 TPA of acetic acid

*19,000 TPA of furfural

Chempolis OY supplies the technology to convert raw bamboo feedstock into these outputs, while EIL executes the project in EPCM mode directly from the demo stage.

Milestone in EIL’s Six-Decade Journey

EIL emphasized that the accomplishment marks a pioneering milestone in its 60-year legacy of delivering world-class engineering solutions and strengthening India’s energy infrastructure. The project will set a benchmark for future bio-refinery initiatives in India, promote ethanol blending, and enable the production of value-added chemicals from by-products.

Breakthrough in Second-Generation Ethanol

The Numaligarh bamboo-based bioethanol plant has achieved a technological breakthrough by producing 99.7% purified ethanol. This makes it the first plant of its kind in India for second-generation (2G) ethanol production. The facility converts bamboo biomass into ethanol, demonstrating advanced innovation in biofuel technology.

Empowering Northeast India

Touted as a transformative project for the Northeast, the bio-refinery will benefit over 50,000 people working in the bamboo supply chain. The plant generates 25 MW of captive power as a zero-waste operation, making it fully self-sufficient in energy.

Strategic Alignment with National and Global Goals

As reported by agriinsite.com, the project plays a critical role in India’s E20 ethanol blending program. It also supports Japan’s clean energy footprint in the Northeast. The project combines sustainable feedstock utilization with advanced technology. It stands as a model for green innovation and the circular economy in India.
