Oil India Limited (OIL) and GAIL India Limited (GAIL) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration across the natural gas value chain, aiming to unlock synergies and improve access to cleaner energy across India.

Director (Marketing) of GAIL and Director (Operations) of OIL executed the MoU in the presence of senior officials, including the Secretary of MoPNG, the Additional Secretary, the Joint Secretary, and the CMDs of both companies.

Government Sees Collaboration as Key to Energy Transition

Highlighting the strategic significance of the partnership, the MoPNG Secretary described the MoU as a “timely step towards enhancing domestic gas availability and ensuring seamless access to demand centres across India.” He emphasized that industry collaborations like this are critical to realizing the government’s vision of a gas-based economy and accelerating India’s ongoing energy transition toward cleaner fuels.

Strengthening Energy Security and Stakeholder Value

GAIL CMD noted that the partnership would strengthen national energy security, expand access to natural gas, and support the government’s vision of sustainable, clean energy for all. OIL CMD added that the MoU represents a strategic alignment of strengths, combining OIL’s upstream exploration and production expertise with GAIL’s marketing and gas distribution capabilities. The collaboration will create value for stakeholders while accelerating India’s transition to a gas-based economy.

Boosting Exploration Momentum

Adding further momentum to India’s natural gas sector, Oil India recently confirmed the occurrence of natural gas in its second exploratory well, Vijayapuram-2. The well was drilled under the Andaman Shallow Offshore Block through the Open Acreage Licensing Policy.  Preliminary testing recorded intermittent gas inflows. Researchers are conducting ongoing isotope studies to evaluate the potential for larger hydrocarbon accumulations. These findings signal promising prospects for future production.

A Step Toward a Cleaner, Gas-Based Future

The MoU between OIL and GAIL marks a strategic milestone in India’s energy landscape, combining upstream exploration strengths with downstream distribution expertise. cnbctv18.com reports that the partnership will foster collaboration and enhance domestic gas availability. It is also expected to accelerate the energy transition and drive India’s clean energy ambitions forward.
