Industrial and electronic gas producer Inox Air Products (Inox AP) commenced construction of a ₹500-crore electronic specialty gas hub at Dholera, Gujarat, aiming to cater to India’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

Supporting Tata Electronics and Semiconductor Growth

The facility is designed to meet the demand from Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fab in Dholera. It will also serve other emerging semiconductor players in the region. The hub will produce Ultra High Purity (UHP) bulk and specialty gases, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and hydrogen. These gases are essential for advanced semiconductor fabrication.

“We have been planning this facility for over a year, and construction has now begun,” said Siddharth Jain, Managing Director, Inox Group. “I am confident that within 12 to 18 months, the facility will be operational, in sync with the Tata project,” Jain added.

Tata Electronics’ ₹91,000-crore project is a joint venture with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. It represents a cornerstone of India’s push to establish a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. A reliable supply of ultra-pure gases is critical for the plant’s operations.

Strategic Investment and Phased Expansion

Inox Air Products became the first industrial and electronic gas company to secure land in Dholera for such a unit. The company will deploy the initial Rs 500-crore investment over two to three years. It will also build a fulfillment center to store and deliver around 40 types of gases not currently produced in India.

“Tata’s current demand alone is too small to justify manufacturing all 45 gas types initially,” Jain explained. “We will gradually scale production as demand grows and are exploring collaborations with multinational partners to produce additional gases and chemicals domestically.” The long-term strategy includes producing more complex chemicals in larger volumes after securing technology tie-ups and further investments. Initially, the company will import some gases, but it has a robust, scalable plan to eventually export from Dholera.

Industry Context and Competition

As reported by theeconomictimes.indiatimes.com, the Dholera semiconductor ecosystem is attracting other global players as well. German industrial gases supplier Linde is reportedly in advanced stages of setting up a new plant in the region to serve large electronics customers. This move highlights the strategic importance of Dholera as India’s emerging semiconductor hub.
