Oil India Limited (OIL) announced the mechanical completion of the Numaligarh-Siliguri Product Pipeline (NSPL) upgradation project on 12 October 2025. This milestone brings the project closer to commissioning, reflecting OIL’s ongoing commitment to strengthening India’s energy infrastructure and enhancing long-term energy security.
Significant Capacity Enhancement
The upgrade increases the pipeline’s capacity from 1.77 million tons per annum (MTPA) to 5.5 MTPA, significantly improving the transportation of refined petroleum products from the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam to Siliguri, West Bengal. The enhancement will alleviate transportation bottlenecks and boost supply efficiency across India’s northeastern region, supporting regional development and energy reliability.
Complementing Refinery Expansion
The NSPL upgradation complements the ongoing Numaligarh Refinery Expansion Project (NREP) by Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), a subsidiary of OIL, which aims to increase refining capacity from 3 MTPA to 9 MTPA. Together, these initiatives are designed to meet growing demand for petroleum products while optimizing the supply chain.
Driving Regional and National Growth
Oil India emphasized that the mechanical completion is a crucial step toward commissioning the upgraded pipeline. The company highlighted that the project not only strengthens the energy infrastructure but also supports regional and national economic growth, aligning with India’s broader energy and development objectives.
