Coal India Limited (CIL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish the Centre for Sustainable Energy at the institute. The initiative aims to drive research, innovation, and capacity-building in sustainable energy technologies, aligning with India’s energy transition and net-zero goals by 2070.
Centre for Sustainable Energy: A Hub for Innovation
The newly established Centre will serve as a nucleus for developing advanced solutions in:
*Repurposing coal mines for new energy and industrial applications
Advancing low-carbon and clean energy technologies
*Reimagining coal as a sustainable resource within India’s evolving energy ecosystem
Funded by CIL and aligned with its diversification strategy, the Centre will leverage academic expertise and industry insights to foster indigenous technology development and promote socioeconomic growth.
Driving India’s Energy Transition
P.M. Prasad, Chairman of Coal India, said, “Coal India is evolving from being the country’s energy provider to a key facilitator of India’s clean energy transformation. This MoU marks a historic step in our journey toward sustainable growth. Through this collaboration with IIT Madras, we aim to develop home-grown solutions that advance energy security, decarbonisation, and socioeconomic development.”
Industry–Academia Collaboration
Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the importance of industry–academia partnerships in accelerating India’s low-carbon transition. By combining cutting-edge research with practical industrial insights, the Centre will address critical challenges in energy sustainability and resource optimization.
Nurturing the Next Generation of Green Energy Leaders
Beyond research, the Centre will focus on human capital development, supporting:
*Ph.D. programs
*Postdoctoral research initiatives
*Internship and training programs
The initiatives aim to equip a new generation of researchers and engineers with the skills to lead India’s green energy transformation, ensuring long-term contributions to the nation’s sustainable development goals.
Strategic Impact
As reported by knnindia.co.in, the collaboration positions Coal India and IIT Madras at the forefront of India’s clean energy innovation, combining technical expertise, research excellence, and industrial experience to drive low-carbon solutions, mine repurposing, and sustainable energy development across the country.
