TotalEnergies Assumes Operator Role in New Guyana Offshore Exploration Block

TotalEnergies (40%, operator), along with its partners QatarEnergy (35%) and Petronas (25%), has signed a production sharing contract for Block S4 with Guyana’s Ministry of National Resources, represented by His Excellency Vickram Bharrat. This follows the block’s award in the 2023 Guyana 2022 Licensing Round.

Block S4: A Promising Offshore Opportunity

Block S4 spans 1,788 km², located approximately 50–100 km offshore. The initial work program will focus on 2,000 km² of 3D seismic acquisition, setting the foundation for exploration in this high-potential basin. The shallow-water block lies within one of Guyana’s prolific offshore basins, known for significant hydrocarbon discoveries, making it a strategic addition to TotalEnergies’ global portfolio.

TotalEnergies Brings Expertise as Operator

TotalEnergies is committed to leveraging its operational expertise in Guyana. By taking on the operator role, the company aims to:

*Drive efficient exploration and development

*Apply advanced technologies to maximize resource potential

*Strengthen global strategic partnerships with QatarEnergy and Petronas

Nicola Mavilla, Senior Vice President Exploration, TotalEnergies, stated, “This block aligns perfectly with our strategy of exploring for material, low-cost, and low-emission resources. We are excited to bring our experience as an operator to Guyana and further deepen collaboration with our partners.”

Focus on Low-Cost, Low-Emission Resources

TotalEnergies’ approach emphasizes sustainable and responsible resource development, focusing on material reserves with low operational costs and minimal environmental impact. Block S4 represents a key opportunity to advance this strategy while contributing to Guyana’s energy growth.

Building Strategic Partnerships

The collaboration with QatarEnergy and Petronas strengthens TotalEnergies’ global exploration network, fostering shared expertise, innovation, and operational excellence in offshore developments. TotalEnergies and its partners combine international experience with local engagement. They aim to unlock the full potential of Block S4 while maintaining high safety, environmental, and technical standards. As per the press release, the initial 3D seismic program is expected to commence shortly. This will set the stage for targeted exploration and assessment of the high-potential offshore block.
