Madras Fertilizers Limited (MFL) has proposed a ₹10,300-crore greenfield ammonia-urea manufacturing project in Chennai to strengthen domestic fertiliser production and reduce India’s dependence on imports. The proposed facility will significantly expand the country’s urea capacity while deploying modern, energy-efficient technologies.
Integrated Plant to Boost Self-Reliance in Fertilisers
The project will comprise an integrated ammonia and urea plant, in line with the government’s broader push for self-reliance in critical agricultural inputs. By increasing domestic output, the facility aims to improve fertiliser availability and enhance national food security.
Support for Farmers
Once commissioned, the plant is expected to ensure a stable and reliable supply of urea for farmers. In addition, the project will generate substantial employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, contributing to regional economic development. As reported by indiaseatradenews.com, the proposal is awaiting approval from the Centre. Following the necessary clearances, MFL plans to proceed with detailed engineering, financial structuring, and execution of the project.
