India and Myanmar have agreed to strengthen cooperation in critical minerals and rare earths, underscoring the growing strategic importance of these resources for economic development, technology manufacturing and supply chain security. The agreement emerged during talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing.
Critical Minerals and Rare Earths Take Centre Stage
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said critical minerals and rare earths featured prominently in the discussions. He noted that both countries have been engaged in dialogue on the subject for some time and agreed to further advance cooperation in these strategically important sectors. The discussions assume significance as countries across the world seek to secure reliable supplies of critical minerals and rare earth elements, which are essential for clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, electronics and advanced manufacturing.
Focus on Defence and Security Cooperation
In addition to economic collaboration, both sides emphasized the importance of defence and security cooperation. According to Misri, India’s engagement with Myanmar in the defence sector has primarily focused on training, capacity building and institutional development. As reported by newindianexpress.com, a key area of cooperation involves preparing Myanmar personnel for participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations. India has been actively supporting Myanmar through specialized training programmes and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
