BASF has introduced Oppanol® N PLUS, an advanced high-performance binder designed to meet the evolving demands of next-generation electric vehicle (EV) batteries. As the battery industry transitions toward advanced technologies such as solid-state batteries (SSBs), manufacturers require materials that can deliver greater performance, reliability, and safety. These next-generation batteries promise longer driving ranges, faster charging capabilities, and improved safety standards, making high-quality component materials increasingly critical.

Engineered for Advanced Battery Technologies

Built on BASF’s proven polyisobutene (PIB) technology, Oppanol® N PLUS has been specifically developed for modern battery architectures. The binder plays a vital role within the cathode, anode, and electrolyte by maintaining structural integrity and ensuring the reliable separation of battery components. Its exceptional elasticity and extensibility allow the material to absorb and compensate for mechanical stress generated during charging and discharging cycles. As a result, the binder helps improve battery stability, durability, and overall service life. Moreover, Oppanol® N PLUS is chemically inert, effectively minimizing unwanted side reactions that can negatively impact battery performance.

Enhancing Manufacturing Efficiency and Process Reliability

One of the key advantages of Oppanol® N PLUS is its exceptionally high and consistent product quality. The material is produced within very narrow specifications, enabling battery manufacturers to achieve greater process control and operational efficiency. The benefits include reduced variability in production processes, lower reformulation requirements, decreased quality control efforts, faster process optimization and adjustments and improved manufacturing consistency. By supporting stable and predictable production environments, Oppanol® N PLUS helps battery manufacturers streamline operations while maintaining high-performance standards.

Flexible Supply Solutions for Battery Manufacturers

In addition to product innovation, BASF is enhancing customer support through improved supply chain services. Customers can access freshly manufactured material directly from stock and benefit from flexible delivery options, including packaging sizes starting at just 20 kilograms. These services are designed to help battery manufacturers and OEMs accelerate the development and commercialization of reliable, high-performance battery systems for electric mobility applications.

Supporting the Transition to Sustainable Mobility

Madeleine Jordan, Global Business Management, Oppanol at BASF, said, “With Oppanol® N PLUS, BASF combines decades of expertise with the requirements of tomorrow’s e-mobility. The new product exemplifies the company’s commitment to continuously advancing proven materials and actively shaping the transition to sustainable technologies.” The introduction of Oppanol® N PLUS reflects BASF’s ongoing commitment to supporting innovation across the battery value chain and enabling the growth of sustainable transportation solutions.

A Versatile Material with Global Applications

For nearly a century, Oppanol® has earned a reputation for its unique combination of properties, including transparency, chemical resistance, water and gas impermeability, physiological safety, and strong adhesive characteristics. Today, the material is used in a diverse range of applications. Its outstanding durability, chemical stability, and long-term performance continue to make Oppanol® a preferred material across multiple industries. As per the press release, with the introduction of Oppanol® N PLUS, BASF is extending this legacy into the rapidly growing battery sector, helping manufacturers develop safer, more efficient, and longer-lasting energy storage solutions for the future of e-mobility.
