Novonesis to Build Advanced Enzyme Production Facility in India

Novonesis is set to expand its existing facility in Patalganga, Maharashtra, with a €600 million investment to build one of the world’s most advanced enzyme production facilities. The major expansion will significantly increase the company’s production capacity to meet rising global demand for biosolutions. At the same time, it will strengthen the flexibility, efficiency and resilience of Novonesis’ global supply network. The expanded facility is expected to become fully operational in 2030 and will manufacture enzymes for a wide range of industries, including biofuels, household care, food and beverages.

Strategic Expansion to Support Global Growth

The Patalganga investment represents an important milestone in Novonesis’ growth strategy. By increasing local production capabilities, the company aims to support customers more effectively while strengthening its position in high-growth markets. Ester Baiget, President and CEO of Novonesis, said the investment reflects the company’s continued commitment to sustainable growth and long-term value creation. According to Baiget, the expansion will strengthen Novonesis’ ability to serve customers globally while supporting the company’s long-term growth ambitions.

Strengthening Supply Across Key Growth Markets

The new production facility will become an integral part of Novonesis’ global manufacturing network. Furthermore, its location in India will bring the company closer to customers across India, the Middle East and Africa. These markets represent an increasingly important part of Novonesis’ business and are expected to grow faster than developed markets in the coming years. Therefore, the Patalganga expansion will enable the company to respond more efficiently to increasing regional demand.

The Patalganga expansion will enhance the company’s manufacturing scale, operational resilience, efficiency and supply flexibility. In addition, the facility’s proximity to key growth markets will help Novonesis respond faster to customer requirements and support its long-term growth targets.

Expanding Novonesis’ Global Manufacturing Footprint

The Patalganga project forms part of a broader programme of investments aimed at strengthening Novonesis’ global production capabilities. The company has also expanded facilities in Rayong, Thailand; Franklinton, North Carolina; Taicang, China; Araucaria, Brazil; and West Allis, Wisconsin. Together, these investments support Novonesis’ strategy of expanding production capacity and creating a more flexible and resilient global supply network.

Focus on Water and Energy Efficiency

Sustainability remains a key priority in the design of the new Patalganga facility. Novonesis plans to incorporate technologies that will reduce both water and energy consumption. For example, freshwater recycling will reduce the amount of freshwater drawn by the site. Meanwhile, integrated heat pumps will lower the energy required for operations. Consequently, these measures are expected to put the facility on a pathway towards lower Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Moving Towards Lower-Emission Biosolutions Production

Anders Lund said the facility will incorporate lessons learned across Novonesis’ global production network. The company aims to improve resource efficiency while increasing production output. By combining advanced manufacturing technologies, water recycling and energy-efficient systems, the Patalganga facility will support Novonesis’ broader ambition to move towards lower-emission and more sustainable biosolutions production. As per the press release, the €600 million investment therefore marks a significant step in expanding India’s role within Novonesis’ global manufacturing network while supporting the growing demand for enzyme-based biosolutions across multiple industries.
