Kutch Copper Ltd, a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, planning to integrate 115 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy into its operations at its copper refinery in Mundra, Gujarat. The initiative forms part of the company’s broader sustainability strategy to reduce carbon emissions, conserve water and improve resource efficiency. In its maiden sustainability report, Kutch Copper outlined plans to incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) considerations into its business operations as demand for copper continues to grow, driven by the energy transition, electric mobility, power transmission and industrial expansion.

Copper Refinery Expansion to Boost Production Capacity

Kutch Copper currently operates a copper smelter with an annual capacity of 500,000 tonnes. The company plans to double this capacity to 1 million tons per annum, which would make it the world’s largest single-location custom copper smelter, according to the company. As production expands, Kutch Copper aims to integrate sustainability considerations into its operational decisions, business strategy and stakeholder engagement.

Renewable Energy Integration to Support Decarbonisation

The planned integration of 115 MW of renewable energy represents a key step towards reducing the copper refinery’s carbon footprint. Through this initiative, the company aims to advance its
long-term decarbonisation goals while improving the environmental performance of its operations. “A key element of our sustainability strategy is the planned integration of 115 megawatts of renewable energy, a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of our operations and advancing long-term decarbonisation goals,” the company stated in its sustainability report. Copper plays a crucial role in clean energy technologies and electrification, supporting applications such as renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicles and power transmission networks. Consequently, sustainable copper production is becoming increasingly important as countries invest in low-carbon technologies.

Water Conservation and Sulphur Emission Control

Alongside renewable energy integration, Kutch Copper has adopted measures to reduce freshwater consumption and manage industrial emissions. The company operates using nearly 100% desalinated water and follows a zero-liquid-discharge approach. These measures help reduce its dependence on freshwater resources and support more efficient water management.

Kutch Copper also reported that it treats 99.8% of sulphur emissions generated by its operations. The company attributes this performance to its commitment to environmental management, pollution control and the use of advanced environmental technologies. “We are currently treating 99.8 per cent of sulphur emissions, reflecting our commitment to adopting global standards in environmental stewardship and pollution control by leveraging advanced environmental technologies,” the company stated.

Community Development and Social Responsibility

Beyond its manufacturing and environmental initiatives, Kutch Copper invests in community development programmes covering healthcare, education, livelihoods and social development. These initiatives form part of the company’s broader ESG approach, which seeks to address social priorities alongside industrial growth and environmental management.

Adani Group Commits funds to the Project

The Adani Group has committed $1.2 billion to the Kutch Copper project. The investment supports the development of domestic copper manufacturing capacity at a time when demand for the metal is increasing across energy, infrastructure and industrial sectors. The Adani Group views the domestic copper industry as an important contributor to India’s ambition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. As reported by ndtv.com, by expanding production capacity and investing in renewable energy and environmental management, Kutch Copper aims to support the country’s growing copper requirements while incorporating sustainability into its long-term operations.
