Technip Energies bagged a major Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for its Lube Modernization and Bottom Upgradation (LMBU) project at the Mumbai Refinery in Maharashtra, India. The contract covers the delivery of two key processing units: a 550 KTA (thousand tonnes per annum) Integrated Hydrocracker and Catalytic Dewaxing (IHCD) unit and an 850 KTA Solvent Deasphalting (SDA) unit. Both units will form an integral part of HPCL’s LMBU project and will be integrated into the existing refinery infrastructure.

Upgrading Lubricant Base Stock Production

The project aims to modernise HPCL’s production of lube oil base stocks, which serve as essential components in automotive engine oils and industrial lubricants. In addition, the new processing units will upgrade heavier refinery streams into higher-value products. Through these improvements, HPCL aims to enhance resource utilisation, increase the value derived from its existing refining assets and strengthen the Mumbai Refinery’s long-term competitiveness.

Supporting India’s Refining and Petroleum Industry

As per company press release, as India continues to modernise its refining infrastructure to meet growing domestic demand for fuels and specialty petroleum products, the project represents an important step towards improving the efficiency and value generation of existing refinery facilities. The integration of advanced processing technologies will support HPCL’s efforts to strengthen its production capabilities and expand its capacity to manufacture high-value petroleum products.

Technip Energies Builds on Long-Standing HPCL Partnership

Loïc Chapuis, President of Project Delivery and Services at Technip Energies, said the contract reflects HPCL’s confidence in the company’s EPC delivery capabilities. He also highlighted the more than two-decade relationship between the two companies. Chapuis added that Technip Energies would leverage its expertise in refinery modernisation and complex project execution to deliver the new processing units and integrate them with the existing facilities, supporting HPCL’s strategic modernisation objectives.
