West Bengal is set to strengthen its petrochemical industry with the inauguration of a ₹6,000 crore phenol-acetone Facility in Haldia, marking a major expansion of Haldia Petrochemicals’ operations. Promoted by Adperma, a subsidiary of Haldia Petrochemicals, the plant will have a proposed production capacity of 3.5 lakh tons. The project aims to strengthen domestic chemical production and reduce India’s dependence on imported phenol and acetone.
Reducing India’s Dependence on Chemical Imports
India currently imports around 50% of its phenol requirements and 40% of its acetone demand. The facility is expected to improve domestic availability of these essential industrial chemicals and support downstream manufacturers. Phenol and acetone serve as important feedstocks for various industrial applications. By increasing local production, the Haldia plant could strengthen supply-chain reliability and help meet the growing requirements of downstream industries.
Project to Generate Skilled Employment Opportunities
Beyond expanding production capacity, the ₹6,000-crore project is expected to create employment opportunities across several technical and business functions. These include chemical engineering, process operations, industrial safety, quality control, logistics and finance. Additionally, the plant could stimulate demand for workers and professionals in ancillary services and downstream businesses operating around the Haldia industrial hub.
Haldia Project Supports West Bengal’s Industrial Growth
The phenol-acetone facility comes amid renewed efforts to attract investment and strengthen industrial activity in West Bengal. The project is expected to contribute to the region’s industrial development by expanding petrochemical production and supporting related businesses. However, the project’s broader economic impact will depend not only on investment and production capacity but also on how effectively local workers, technical professionals and service providers integrate into the emerging industrial ecosystem. As reported by milleniumpost.in, the Haldia facility represents a significant development for India’s petrochemical sector, with the potential to reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic supply chains and create new employment opportunities in West Bengal.
