Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has won the Green Hydrogen Project of the Year – India award at the Asian Oil & Gas Awards 2026 for its 5 MW green hydrogen plant at Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh. The recognition highlights BPCL’s efforts to advance clean energy technologies and accelerate India’s transition towards a low-carbon economy. The project aligns with the Government of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country’s Net Zero 2070 vision. Furthermore, it supports BPCL’s commitment to reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040.

BPCL Commissions 5 MW Green Hydrogen Plant at Bina Refinery

BPCL has commissioned the 5 MW green hydrogen plant at Bina Refinery, establishing a significant milestone in the integration of green hydrogen into India’s refining sector. The company completed the project in just 15 months, demonstrating its focus on efficient project execution and operational excellence. The facility uses advanced alkaline water electrolysis technology to produce approximately 2.15 metric tonnes of green hydrogen per day, with an energy consumption of 50.75 kWh per kilogram of hydrogen. The plant features two advanced alkaline electrolysers and a purification system capable of delivering hydrogen with 99.999% purity. Powered entirely by renewable energy, the facility will supply high-purity green hydrogen for integration into refinery operations.

Green Hydrogen Plant to Reduce Carbon Emissions

One of the key benefits of BPCL’s Bina green hydrogen project is its potential to replace conventionally produced grey hydrogen with renewable-powered green hydrogen. This transition is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 9,000 metric tons annually. Consequently, the project will contribute to industrial decarbonisation while supporting BPCL’s emissions-reduction targets. Moreover, the facility will demonstrate the technical feasibility of integrating green hydrogen into existing refinery operations, potentially encouraging wider adoption of the technology across the refining industry.

Project Advances India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission

BPCL’s Bina green hydrogen plant supports India’s broader ambition to establish a competitive hydrogen-based economy. By combining renewable energy with hydrogen production, the project advances the objectives of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Green hydrogen can help decarbonise energy-intensive industries, including refining, fertilisers and chemicals, where reducing emissions through conventional electrification can be challenging. The project also supports India’s long-term Net Zero 2070 vision by demonstrating how cleaner hydrogen production can contribute to more sustainable industrial processes.

Asian Oil & Gas Awards Recognise BPCL’s Clean Energy Leadership

The Asian Oil & Gas Awards recognise organisations that demonstrate innovation, operational excellence and measurable contributions across the oil and gas value chain. BPCL’s award for its Bina green hydrogen plant highlights the company’s investment in emerging clean energy technologies and its efforts to transform conventional refining operations. As reported by indianmasterminds.com, the recognition reinforces BPCL’s commitment to sustainable growth, technological innovation and lower-carbon energy solutions. As India expands its green hydrogen ecosystem, projects such as the Bina facility could play an important role in accelerating industrial decarbonisation and strengthening the country’s clean energy capabilities.
