Adani Power Ltd. has initiated a pilot program to incorporate green ammonia as a fuel blend at its Mundra plant as part of its comprehensive efforts to reduce carbon emissions. As India’s largest private sector power project, the Mundra facility aims to co-fire up to 20% green ammonia in the boiler of a conventional 330-megawatt coal-fired unit.

Adani Power has joined forces with Japan’s IHI Corp. and Kowa Co. for this project, with plans to assess its potential expansion to other units and stations. Kowa specialises in energy-saving products, while IHI, a heavy industry company, brings expertise in ammonia firing technology.

Initial combustion tests with a 20% ammonia blend are underway at IHI’s facility in Japan. The collaborators are optimistic that the outcomes will be positive, paving the way for the implementation of this innovative green solution at the Mundra power station. As reported by BQ PRIME, Mundra is the first location outside of Japan to be chosen for this cutting-edge green initiative.
