Adani’s Kutch Copper Smelter in Mundra Ready for Launch

Adani Group’s fully-owned Kutch Copper smelter in Mundra, Gujarat, is preparing to start operations in the coming weeks. The first unit of its copper refinery, commissioned earlier this year, is now ready for production.

Expansion Plans to Boost Capacity

After stabilizing the initial 500,000-tonne unit over the next three quarters, Adani plans to expand the smelter to a total capacity of one million tonnes. The expansion will require an investment of $700–800 million, bringing the total investment in the facility to approximately $2 billion. Once completed, the Mundra-based smelter will be among the world’s largest single-location copper smelters.

Sourcing Copper Concentrate from Global Markets

To ensure a steady raw material supply, Kutch Copper smelter will initially source its copper concentrate from Latin America. However, the company is actively exploring suppliers from Australia and Africa to diversify its supply base and enhance supply chain resilience.

Supporting Adani’s Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Growth

Around 40% of the copper produced at Kutch Copper will support Adani Group’s renewable energy, transmission, and wires and cables businesses. This will strengthen the company’s vertical integration strategy and reduce dependence on external suppliers.

Future Expansion Timeline

The second phase of expansion will double the smelter’s capacity to one million tonnes per annum (MTPA). It will commence after stabilizing the first unit. As reported by projectstoday.com, Adani plans to fund this expansion using cash flows from current operations. Major investment decisions are expected only after FY27.
