Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) commissioned a cumulative 3.37 Gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Khavda in Gujarat, marking one of the world’s largest single-location battery storage deployments outside China. The company completed the utility-scale battery storage project within just 10 months of starting on-site construction, making it one of the fastest large-scale BESS deployments globally. The latest phase includes an additional 1.37 GWh commissioned in March 2026, taking the total operational storage capacity at Khavda to 3.37 GWh.

Battery Storage Becoming Critical for Renewable Energy Growth

As renewable energy adoption accelerates globally, Battery Energy Storage Systems are increasingly becoming a critical component of modern power infrastructure. Solar and wind energy generation fluctuate depending on weather conditions and time of day, often creating inconsistencies in electricity supply. Large-scale battery storage systems help solve this challenge by storing surplus renewable energy during periods of high generation and releasing it when demand rises or renewable generation falls. According to AGEL, the Khavda BESS project will significantly improve grid reliability, support peak electricity demand, and enable round-the-clock delivery of clean energy at scale.

Storage Capacity Can Power Nearly One Million Homes

The company stated that the 3.37 GWh storage facility can store enough clean electricity to power nearly one million homes for an entire day. Additionally, the battery system can help meet peak power demand requirements for cities such as Indore and Chandigarh, or even support the electricity needs of the entire state of Goa during peak periods.

Integrated with Massive 30 GW Renewable Energy Project

The battery storage system has been strategically developed at Khavda in Gujarat, where AGEL is building a massive 30 GW renewable energy complex. Out of the planned 30 GW capacity, nearly 9.9 GW is already operational, making Khavda one of India’s most important renewable energy development zones. The battery storage infrastructure integrates advanced energy management systems with lithium-ion battery technologies to optimize efficiency, reliability, and grid responsiveness.

AGEL Plans Aggressive Expansion in Energy Storage

AGEL stated that it plans to add more than 10 GWh of additional battery storage capacity during FY27. The company further aims to expand its total battery storage portfolio to 50 GWh over the next five years as part of its long-term clean energy and grid stability strategy.

Sagar Adani Highlights Importance of Energy Storage

Sagar Adani said that large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of India’s clean energy transition. He noted that as renewable energy capacity continues to scale rapidly, reliable storage infrastructure will become essential for delivering flexible and dispatchable clean power. According to Sagar Adani, the commissioning of the 3.37 GWh BESS strengthens the foundation for resilient and future-ready energy systems while reinforcing AGEL’s long-term commitment to building clean energy infrastructure at a global scale.

Khavda Positioned as Global Clean Energy Hub

The Khavda renewable energy complex is expected to evolve into one of the world’s largest integrated clean energy hubs as India accelerates its transition toward non-fossil fuel power generation. As reported by penthemagazine.com, with large-scale renewable generation and rapidly expanding storage capacity, the project is expected to play a significant role in strengthening India’s clean energy security and supporting its long-term sustainability goals.
