Arkema, a global player in specialty materials, has entered into a strategic partnership with Catalyxx, an innovator in bio-based chemicals. Together, the companies aim to create a new value chain for low-carbon, bio-based acrylic resins by leveraging Catalyxx’s breakthrough proprietary technology.

First-of-Its-Kind Bio-Alcohol Facility

As part of this initiative, Catalyxx is preparing to build the world’s first industrial-scale facility to produce bio-alcohols, including bio n-butanol, from bioethanol. This patented process was successfully validated at a demonstration plant in Seville, Spain. It produces bio-alcohols with a significantly lower carbon footprint than fossil-based alternatives.

Expanding Applications for Bio-Based Resins

Arkema is evaluating the use of these bio-alcohols as feedstocks to enable commercial-scale production of bio-based acrylic resins. These resins will address high-performance applications across coatings, adhesives for new energy solutions, e-mobility, living comfort, and sustainable infrastructure markets.

Commitment to Decarbonization

“This partnership is fully aligned with Arkema’s strategy and ambition to deliver ever more sustainable solutions to our customers,” said Richard Jenkins, Senior Vice President, Arkema Coating Solutions. “By working with Catalyxx, we strengthen our ability to reduce the carbon footprint of our materials and meet the growing demands of environmental regulations and green building certifications.”

A Milestone for Catalyxx

As per company press release, for Catalyxx, this collaboration underscores its mission to scale sustainable technologies. Joaquin Alarcón, Founder and CEO of Catalyxx, stated, “This project is a major milestone for Catalyxx, and we value the trust and shared vision we’ve built with Arkema over the past few years. This step reinforces our common interest in advancing sustainable materials and supports the continued development of our first commercial plant.”

Advancing the Transition to Renewable Alternatives

This project represents a key milestone in the shift toward responsible, renewable materials. Arkema and Catalyxx are replacing fossil-based raw materials with bio-based alternatives. This drives the industry forward while ensuring sustainability without compromising performance.
