BASF to Wind Down Hydrosulfites Operations and Close Ludwigshafen Facility

BASF announced its decision to exit the hydrosulfites business and shut down the corresponding production facility in Ludwigshafen. As part of this transition, the company will phase out the supply of Hydrosulfite F, HydroBlue® 90, HydroBlue® 92, Hydrosulfite Evo, Adlite®, and Blankit. The move follows BASF’s ongoing strategic review of the Ludwigshafen production setup. It underscores the company’s commitment to prioritize business activities with long-term value creation potential.

Supporting Employees Through the Transition

Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF’s Monomers division, commented, “Focus is a cornerstone of BASF’s Winning Ways strategy. By concentrating on profitability and long-term value creation, we are safeguarding the competitiveness of our business in a challenging economic environment. As we phase out our activities in the hydrosulfites business, we will work closely with our employees and customers to ensure a responsible transition.”

Applications and Industry Relevance

The textile industry primarily uses hydrosulfites as reducing agents during the dyeing process, and the pulp and paper industry uses them as bleaching additives. BASF will carefully manage its exit to minimize customer disruption and ensure supply continuity during the phase-out.

Commitment to Strategic Focus

According to the company press release, the decision reflects BASF’s broader strategy to focus on higher-value business areas. This approach aims to ensure sustainable growth and strengthen competitiveness amid evolving market challenges.
