Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a Fortune Global 500 company and one of India’s leading oil and gas enterprises, is celebrating sixty years of its Kochi Refinery. From its modest beginnings in 1966, the refinery has evolved into a hub of energy, innovation, and sustainability. The Diamond Jubilee celebrations underscore BPCL’s commitment to a brighter, greener future.

BPCL Leaders Emphasize Sustainability and Efficiency

Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) with additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director, BPCL, highlighted the refinery’s strong performance in Q1 and its proactive sustainability initiatives. He noted significant reductions in the Energy Intensity Index (EII) and raw water consumption by
20–25%, achieved through measures such as:

*Maximizing water recycling via Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) and the RODM plant

*Optimizing cooling tower make-up water

*Implementing other targeted water conservation initiatives

He added that further technological advancements are underway to continue lowering water usage and enhancing operational efficiency.

From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader

Established in 1966 as Cochin Refineries Limited in collaboration with Phillips Petroleum, USA, the refinery initially had a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. Renamed Kochi Refineries Limited, it now operates as one of BPCL’s three major refineries with a current crude oil refining capacity of 15.5 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA).

The refinery produces a diverse range of fuels including Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Naphtha, Motor Spirit, Kerosene, Aviation Turbine Fuel, High-Speed Diesel, and Asphalt. It also manufactures specialty products for domestic markets, such as Benzene, Toluene, Food Grade Hexane, Propylene, Special Boiling Point Spirit, Mineral Turpentine Oil, Sulphur, Petcoke, and Hydrogen.

Driving Petrochemical Growth and Innovation

In the petrochemical sector, the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 14, 2021. BPCL is further investing ₹5,044 crore in a new Polypropylene (PP) Unit at Kochi Refinery with a production capacity of 400 kilo-tonnes per annum (KTPA). This facility will utilize the refinery’s propylene feedstock to meet growing domestic demand for polypropylene, a versatile material used in packaging films, containers, and homeware products.

A Legacy of Sustainability and Progress

As Kochi Refinery marks its Diamond Jubilee, BPCL continues to demonstrate its commitment to energy efficiency, sustainable growth, and innovation. As per the press release, with its robust product portfolio, ongoing technological advancements, and ambitious projects in petrochemicals, the refinery is poised to remain a cornerstone of India’s energy and industrial landscape for decades to come.
