Cochin International Airport, fully reliant on solar energy, inked a significant agreement with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to develop a green hydrogen plant within its premises. The strategic move positions Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) as the pioneering airport operator worldwide to host a hydrogen power generation facility on-site.

With a cumulative installed capacity of 50 MW of solar power generation, the airport has continuously expanded its capabilities since the inception of its solar plant, initially set up with a capacity of 12 MW. Presently, the solar farm yields an impressive 2,00,000 units of power daily. The commitment to establishing a 100-MW hydrogen power generation facility marks a logical progression for the environmentally conscious airport, a journey that earned it the prestigious Champions of the Earth award bestowed by the United Nations in 2018.

As reported by businessline, BPCL will spearhead the establishment of an integrated green hydrogen plant and fuelling station at the airport, offering technological expertise and operational management. In return, CIAL will provide suitable land, water, and access to green energy resources, facilitating the realization of the initiative.
