Coal India Limited plans to invest nearly ₹1 lakh crore over the coming years in coal evacuation infrastructure and coal gasification projects. The investment supports the company’s target of producing 1 billion tonnes of coal annually by FY30. According to Coal India Chairman B. Sairam, the investment programme will strengthen rail connectivity, modernise coal handling systems and expand the value-added utilisation of coal. The company expects these initiatives to improve logistics, reduce supply bottlenecks and support its long-term production strategy.
₹48,000 Crore for Rail Connectivity and Coal Evacuation
Coal India plans to allocate approximately ₹48,000 crore towards rail connectivity and mechanised coal evacuation infrastructure. This investment will help the company modernise coal transportation and handling systems while improving the movement of coal from mines to industrial and power-sector consumers.
Infrastructure to Support 1 Billion Tonne Production Target
The planned infrastructure investment will become increasingly important as Coal India scales up production. Higher coal output will require efficient evacuation systems to ensure that additional volumes reach power plants and industrial consumers without creating transportation bottlenecks. By strengthening rail links and mechanising coal handling operations, the company aims to improve supply reliability, reduce transit constraints and enhance overall logistics efficiency.
Gasification to Drive Value-Added Coal Utilisation
Alongside evacuation infrastructure, Coal India is also increasing its focus on coal gasification. The technology can convert coal into useful products such as syngas, which can subsequently support the production of chemicals, fuels and other value-added products. This approach can help Coal India diversify the use of coal beyond conventional combustion and create new opportunities across the energy and chemical sectors.
Building Infrastructure for Long-Term Growth
Coal India’s investment programme combines higher coal production with infrastructure expansion and value-added coal utilisation. As reported by indianmasterminds.com, while the company continues to target one billion tons of annual coal production by FY30, investments in rail connectivity, mechanised evacuation and gasification are expected to strengthen its operational capabilities and support its long-term growth strategy.
