Coal Production Registers Growth

In 2023, the country experienced a notable surge in coal production, witnessing a substantial increase of 10.75% to reach 928 billion tons (bt) by the close of the year. The government anticipates that coal production will surpass the 1 billion mark by the end of the current financial year. The ministry of coal reported that Coal India Limited (CIL) achieved a production of 71.86 million tons (mt) in December 2023, marking an 8.27% growth from the 66.37 mt recorded in December 2022.

The cumulative coal production up to December 2023 in the fiscal year 2023-24 demonstrated a significant rise to 684.31 mt, reflecting a remarkable 12.47% increase compared to the same period in the fiscal year 2022-23, where production stood at 608.34 mt.

The coal dispatch for December 2023 reached 86.23 mt, showcasing an 8.36% growth over the previous year. As reported by Business Standard, CIL’s coal dispatch in December 2023 amounted to 66.10 mt, indicating a growth of 5.49% compared to December 2022, when it was 62.66 mt. The ministry of coal is positive about the continued upward trajectory of coal production in the country.
