Corning Incorporated and SGD Pharma inaugurated a glass tubing manufacturing facility in Vemula, Mahbubnagar district, Telangana, with a combined investment of ₹500 crore. The state-of-the-art plant integrates Corning’s Velocity Vial technology with SGD Pharma’s vial-converting expertise, creating a robust platform for high-quality glass tubing production. The facility will manufacture Type I borosilicate glass tubing, a critical material for injectable drug packaging, direct injection delivery systems, diagnostics, and biologics, supporting India’s growing pharmaceutical industry.

Meeting Regional Needs with Localised Production

“The inauguration of the facility marks an important milestone in addressing critical regional needs, such as expanded production capacity, proximity to customers, and the localisation of supply chains,” said Chris Hudson, Vice President and General Manager, Corning Life Sciences.

He added, “This facility will play a vital role in accelerating the delivery of injectable treatments, supporting local pharmaceutical growth, and ensuring safer, more efficient access to critical medicines.” The venture establishes production in Telangana, ensuring faster delivery and enhanced supply chain resilience. It also provides localized access to advanced glass technologies for India’s healthcare ecosystem.

Global Expertise Meets Local Manufacturing

Olivier Rousseau, CEO, SGD Pharma, highlighted, “This joint venture with Corning marks a major milestone in our global growth strategy. By establishing a state-of-the-art glass tubing facility in Telangana, we are not only securing a critical part of our supply chain but also bringing world-class technology to one of the fastest-growing pharmaceutical markets.” The collaboration brings together international expertise and local manufacturing capabilities, creating a high-standard production hub for India’s pharmaceutical sector.

Economic Impact and Employment Generation

Sudhir Pillai, Managing Director, Corning India, noted that the facility will provide a boost to the regional economy. The new plant aligns with India’s goals of self-reliance and sustainable growth. It strengthens the domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem and reduces dependence on imports.
