CSIR-IHBT, Palampur Hosted National Workshop on Science Communication

The National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR), New Delhi, in collaboration with the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur, launched a two-day national workshop titled “Communicate to Connect: Science for All” from 14 to 15 October 2025. The event brought together leading scientists, communicators, and innovators to explore strategies for effective science outreach and inclusive communication.

Inaugural Session Highlights

Dr. Geetha Vani Rayasam, Director, CSIR-NIScPR, emphasized the need to inform students and stakeholders about scientific research across India, highlighting contributions from remote regions like Palampur. Shri C.B. Singh, Chief Scientist andf Head, Popular Science Division, CSIR-NIScPR, elaborated on the workshop’s goal of building a collaborative science community through its various programs.

Balendu Dadhich, Director, Microsoft India, underscored the importance of democratizing science communication. He highlighted the need to combat misinformation, ensure fact-checked content, and provide oversight in the era of artificial intelligence.

Dr. Manoj Kumar Patairiya, Former Head and Adviser, NCSTC, DST, highlighted, “There should be a continuous flow of knowledge both from the land to the labs and from the labs back to the land.”

Dr. Sudesh Kumar Yadav, Director, CSIR-IHBT, Palampur, emphasized, “Scientific understanding combined with empathy and feelings represents the true spirit of science.”

Prof. K.G. Suresh, Director, India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, highlighted the need to integrate science communication across governance, beyond science and technology departments. He cited the polio campaign as a model. He stressed the role of local influencers and medical practitioners in dispelling myths and boosting public acceptance of scientific initiatives.

Key Workshop Themes and Discussions

The workshop featured brainstorming sessions on:

*Science popularisation strategies

*The evolving role of media

*Enhancing women’s participation in science communication

Outreach to marginalized and deprived communities

Notable speakers included Dr. Chandra Mohan Nautiyal (Former Consultant, Science Communication, INSA), Shri Hasan Jawaid Khan (Former Editor, Science Reporter & Chief Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR), Dr. Suman Ray (Senior Principal Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR), and Dr. Manish Mohan Gore (Senior Scientist, CSIR-NIScPR).

Innovative Approaches to Science Communication

Participants explored diverse formats for science communication, including social media, science fiction, poetry, and electronic media. The second day featured a student-scientist connect program, popular science writing sessions, and participant presentations, fostering active engagement and skill-building.

The workshop reinforced CSIR’s dedication to fostering a rational, inclusive society through innovative science communication.
