The Kassø e-methanol facility in Aabenraa, Denmark, has officially commenced operations, marking a major milestone in the global shift toward low-emission energy solutions. Now fully operational, the plant is delivering e-methanol to major global offtakers committed to reducing their carbon footprints.
A Collaborative Power-to-X Breakthrough
Developed by European Energy in partnership with Mitsui & Co., the facility is owned by Solar Park Kassø ApS under Kassø MidCo ApS. European Energy holds a 51% stake, while Mitsui owns 49%, combining local expertise with global reach. The venture brings together two industry leaders with a shared vision of scaling Power-to-X technologies and enabling the energy transition in hard-to-abate sectors.
Supplying Global Sustainability Leaders
The Kassø facility supplies e-methanol to major companies such as A.P. Moller – Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk. These industry giants aim to replace fossil-based methanol in key operations with a cleaner, renewable alternative. With an annual production capacity of 42,000 tonnes, the facility is the first globally to produce e-methanol at commercial scale, using 100% renewable energy sources.
Powered by Solar, Fueled by Innovation
Located adjacent to Northern Europe’s largest solar park, the 304 MW Kassø Solar Park, the plant integrates green hydrogen production and carbon capture and utilization. It combines biogenic CO₂ with on-site green hydrogen to create e-methanol that cuts carbon emissions by up to 97% compared to conventional methanol. The integrated approach supports the decarbonization of sectors where electrification is challenging—such as shipping, plastics, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Transforming Transport and Manufacturing
A.P. Moller – Maersk will use Kassø’s e-methanol to fuel the Laura Mærsk, the world’s first methanol-powered container vessel. In parallel, LEGO Group and Novo Nordisk will incorporate e-methanol into their production processes to replace fossil-derived methanol in select products.
Carsten Rasmussen, COO at LEGO Group said, “This partnership enables us to produce select LEGO® elements using renewable e-methanol while upholding our quality standards. It’s a strong example of how cross-industry collaboration drives meaningful change.”
Dorethe Nielsen, VP of Environmental Strategy at Novo Nordisk, said, “This initiative supports our efforts to decarbonize our supply chain. It also helps lower the environmental impact of our healthcare products.”
Voices of Leadership
Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy said, “Kassø represents renewable energy in action. We’re proud to move Power-to-X from concept to commercial reality.”
Takashi Furutani, Senior Executive Managing Officer at Mitsui & Co., noted, “Kassø embodies the power of global collaboration. It advances the energy transition and integrates low-emission solutions across value chains.”
Rabab Raafat Boulos, COO at A.P. Moller – Maersk mentioned, “The delivery of e-methanol from Kassø is a key milestone in our journey to decarbonize shipping. Methanol will be vital in reaching our net-zero goals.”
A Blueprint for Global Energy Transition
The Kassø e-methanol facility sets a new global benchmark for clean fuel innovation. It offers a scalable, renewable solution to replace fossil methanol in critical applications. As reported by europeanenergy.com, the project aligns industrial giants with pioneering clean-tech. It demonstrates how collaboration and technology can accelerate the global energy transition.
