India has taken another significant step towards strengthening its advanced biofuel ecosystem with the launch of the Grand Butanol Challenge. The nationwide initiative aims to accelerate indigenous bio-butanol production, promote deep-tech innovation, and support startups developing next-generation biofuel technologies. Launched by the MC² Foundation under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), the programme is backed by seven leading public sector energy companies and offers financial support of up to ₹12.5 crore to accelerate technology development and commercialisation.

Initiative to Strengthen India’s Biofuel Ecosystem

The Grand Butanol Challenge is designed to encourage innovation in sustainable butanol production while reducing India’s dependence on conventional fossil fuels. Through financial assistance, mentorship, pilot deployment opportunities, and commercialisation support, the initiative seeks to develop home-grown technologies that contribute to the country’s energy security, decarbonisation, and net-zero ambitions.

Seven Energy PSUs Back the Initiative

The challenge is supported by seven major public sector enterprises (PSUs) from India’s energy sector:

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL)

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC)

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL)

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)

GAIL (India) Limited

Oil India Limited

Petronet LNG Limited

₹12.5 Crore Funding to Accelerate Innovation

The Grand Butanol Challenge offers a total financial package of up to ₹12.5 crore to support promising technologies. The programme is open to startups, researchers, academic institutions, innovators, and technology developers working on advanced butanol production technologies. Applications for the challenge will remain open until August 15, 2026.

Focus on Three Advanced Butanol Production Technologies

The initiative has identified three key technology areas for innovation:

Fermentation-based production of n-Butanol and Iso-Butanol

Catalytic production technologies for butanol

Other innovative and sustainable production pathways for bio-butanol

By supporting multiple technology routes, the programme aims to accelerate the development of commercially viable and environmentally sustainable biofuel solutions.

Supporting Technologies Ready for Commercial Scale-Up

The challenge targets innovations at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 4 to TRL 7, focusing on technologies that have moved beyond laboratory research and are ready for pilot-scale validation and commercial deployment.

Priority technology areas include:

Microbial production of butanol using non-food biomass feedstocks

Low-energy butanol separation technologies

Bio-derived cetane improvers

Field-deployable fuel quality control systems

Advanced fermentation technologies

These innovations are expected to improve production efficiency, reduce manufacturing costs, and support the large-scale adoption of advanced biofuels across India.

C-CAMP to Provide Technical Mentorship

To strengthen the innovation ecosystem, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) has joined the initiative as its implementation and mentorship partner. C-CAMP will provide technical guidance, connect innovators with India’s biotechnology ecosystem, and help accelerate the commercialisation of promising technologies through industry collaboration and expert mentoring.
