FMC Corporation has been honoured with two Responsible Care® Awards from the American Chemistry Council (ACC), highlighting the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and operational excellence. The American Chemistry Council awarded the Waste Management and Water Stewardship Award and the Energy Efficiency Award for breakthrough initiatives at FMC’s Mobile, Alabama facility.
Cutting Waste and Emissions with Innovative Onsite Treatment
FMC received the Waste Management and Water Stewardship Award for its cutting-edge wastewater treatment program, which now enables the onsite treatment of two-thirds of the facility’s manufacturing waste stream. This strategic shift has diverted 12 million pounds of waste from disposal annually, significantly reducing environmental impact.
Previously, the facility incinerated over 15 million pounds of process waste each year—an approach that generated high costs and substantial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Thanks to this initiative, GHG emissions have dropped by 575 metric tons of CO₂ equivalents, while cost savings exceed $4 million annually.
Boosting Efficiency Through Smarter Energy Use
FMC also earned the Energy Efficiency Award for a natural gas reduction project that underscores the company’s focus on energy optimization. Through detailed engineering analysis and regulatory engagement, the Mobile team successfully modified operating permits for a vent gas incinerator. This allowed the unit to run at a lower combustion temperature, resulting in a 29% reduction in natural gas usage—a meaningful win for both energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

Both award-winning projects received exceptional merit distinctions from the ACC, reflecting their impact and alignment with Responsible Care® principles. “These achievements reflect our teams’ determination to challenge assumptions and deliver smarter, more sustainable solutions,” said a representative from FMC. “By improving our operations, we’re not only benefiting our company—we’re contributing to a healthier planet,” the representative added.
