GAIL (India) Limited and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly evaluate upstream Exploration and Production (E&P) opportunities across the country. The agreement signals a deeper collaboration between two of India’s leading energy public sector enterprises and underscores their shared commitment to reducing import dependence while enhancing indigenous oil and gas output.
Formal Signing in Presence of Senior Leadership
Sanjay Agarwal, Executive Director (Business Development), GAIL, formalised the MoU in the presence of R.K. Singhal, Director (Business Development), along with senior officials from both organisations. Representing ONGC, Arunangshu Sarkar, Director (Strategy and Corporate Affairs), and O.P. Sinha, Director (Exploration), witnessed the signing, highlighting the strategic importance both companies attach to the partnership.
Joint Evaluation of Domestic Upstream Assets
Under the agreement, GAIL and ONGC will jointly identify, assess, and pursue domestic upstream oil and gas blocks and projects. The companies will focus on technically feasible and commercially viable opportunities, ensuring that investments deliver long-term value. Moreover, the collaboration allows both firms to explore participation through joint ventures, partnerships, or co-development models, enabling flexible and efficient project execution.
Leveraging Complementary Strengths
Importantly, the partnership combines the distinct strengths of both organisations. While ONGC brings decades of expertise in exploration and production, GAIL contributes robust capabilities in midstream infrastructure, gas transmission, marketing, and business development. By integrating these complementary capabilities, the companies aim to accelerate project timelines, optimise resources, and improve operational efficiency across the value chain.
Supporting India’s Energy Security Goals
As reported by indianmasterminds.com, beyond business synergies, the alliance aligns closely with India’s broader energy strategy. By increasing domestic oil and gas production, the partnership is expected to reduce import dependency, enhance supply resilience, and support the government’s vision of an Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) energy ecosystem. As India continues to expand its energy demand, collaborations like this are likely to play a critical role in securing reliable and sustainable hydrocarbon resources for the future.
