Gas Authority of India (GAIL) is set to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Adani Group’s Dhamra terminal in Odisha through its upcoming Nagpur–Jharsuguda pipeline. The move strengthens GAIL’s ability to deliver reliable gas supplies to industries and commercial users across central and eastern India.

First Supplies from Nagpur Section

GAIL is finalizing the Mumbai–Nagpur section, aligned with the Samruddhi Expressway, and will soon charge it. GAIL expects the Butibori industrial hub near Nagpur to receive its first supplies within a month. Work on extending the pipeline to Jharsuguda is projected to finish in the next 2–3 months.

Dual Sourcing from East and West Coasts

The new link enhances GAIL’s operational flexibility by allowing gas sourcing from both the western coast terminals at Dahej and Dabhol and the eastern coast terminal at Dhamra. This two-way pumping mechanism will help prevent pressure drops and ensure a steady, uninterrupted supply to consumers.

Dhamra LNG Terminal: A Growing Hub

The Dhamra LNG terminal, operated by an Adani–Total joint venture, currently has a capacity of 5 MTPA (expandable to 6.5 MTPA) and is running at 2.3 MTPA utilization. Adani has invested nearly ₹10,000 crore in developing the terminal and is simultaneously scaling up capacity at the adjoining Dhamra port.

Rising Cargo Handling at Dhamra Port

Projectstoday.com reports that Dhamra port, a critical gateway for eastern India, will handle 50 million tons of cargo this year. Its portfolio includes LNG alongside bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore fines. This highlights its importance as a multi-fuel and multi-cargo hub.
