Global Aluminium Demand Set to Double Over the Next Decade

Hindalco Industries, the flagship metals company of the Aditya Birla Group, projects that India’s aluminium consumption will double to 16 million tons per annum over the next 10 years, driven by strong domestic demand across sectors. To capture this growth, Hindalco initiated its highest-ever capex of ₹18,000 crore in the previous fiscal year.

Robust Demand Across Key Sectors

Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Hindalco Industries, highlighted that the surge in transport, railways, energy, and construction is propelling demand for customised metal solutions. “For Hindalco, this is the blueprint of nation-building in real time, where aluminium and copper form the backbone of infrastructure, mobility, and clean energy,” Birla stated. Currently, India’s aluminium consumption stands at 5.5 million tonnes in FY25, with expectations to double within a decade. Similarly, copper demand is accelerating, supported by urbanisation, digitalisation, clean energy adoption, and electric mobility.

Strategic Capacity Expansion

Hindalco is aggressively scaling up its production capabilities to meet this demand. Key initiatives include:

*Aluminium Smelter Expansion: Increasing capacity at Aditya smelter by 1.80 lakh tons per annum and Mahan by 3.60 lakh tons.

*Greenfield Alumina Refinery: Setting up a new 8.50 lakh ton facility.

*Coal Security: Secured resources with the allocation of the 12-million-ton Meenakshi coal mine.

In copper, Hindalco is expanding its Dahej smelter by 3 lakh tons, which will position it as the world’s largest copper smelting complex outside China.

Strengthening Downstream and Recycling

On the downstream side, Hindalco is focusing on value-added aluminium and copper products, specialty alumina, and metal recycling. The company aims to quadruple downstream EBITDA by FY30 from the FY24 base.

Key projects include:

*Copper Tubes Plant: Currently ramping up production.

*E-waste and Copper Recycling Facility: Construction underway at Pakhajan (Gujarat) for India’s first and world’s second-largest dedicated facility.

Global Expansion Through Novelis

At Novelis, Hindalco’s US-based subsidiary, the $4.1 billion Bay Minette project is on track for completion in the second half of next year. Upon completion of all ongoing projects, Novelis’ total production capacity will reach about 5 million tonnes per annum.

Driving Electric Mobility and Sustainability

As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, Hindalco is advancing in the electric mobility sector, producing aluminium battery enclosures that make vehicles lighter, safer, and more energy-efficient. The company also plans to introduce aluminium cycle and e-cycle components to global markets. These products will bring the benefits of lightweight, strength, and sustainability to personal mobility.
