The government is embarking on an ambitious mission to become a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing by targeting 7-nanometer (nm) chip production within the next five to seven years. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has outlined a comprehensive roadmap to secure cutting-edge technologies and design capabilities, marking a significant leap in the country’s semiconductor ambitions.
Tata Group Leads with First Wafer Fab Plant
As part of the strategy, the Tata Group is establishing India’s first wafer fabrication facility with an investment of ₹91,000 crore. The plant will initially produce chips at 28 nm and above, creating a foundation for advanced manufacturing capabilities.
International Partnerships to Accelerate Progress
To fast-track the roadmap for 7 nm nodes, the government has forged a strategic collaboration with IBM, enabling access to IBM’s global expertise in chip design and semiconductor manufacturing. Additionally, the involvement of IMEC, a globally recognized nanotechnology research hub, brings critical research and innovation support, though details of its role remain under wraps.
Concrete Roadmap for a Self-Reliant Future
A senior MeitY official confirmed that the roadmap is firm and actionable, reflecting India’s determination to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen domestic capabilities. The strategy combines infrastructure development, global alliances, and innovation to position India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.
