Hindalco to Build Plant in Odisha to Manufacture Battery Foil

Hindalco Industries will invest ₹800 crore in the construction of a new plant near Sambalpur in Odisha. The facility aims to produce 25,000 tons of high-quality aluminium foil, a crucial component in lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells. The plant will be situated alongside a 25 MW solar power plant and will have access to additional solar energy through a 400 KV national grid connection.

Expected to be commissioned in July 2025, the new plant will complement Hindalco’s existing facility in Mouda, Maharashtra. Anticipating a significant surge in demand for battery-grade aluminium foil, reaching 40,000 tons by 2030, Hindalco is strategically expanding its manufacturing capacity. The growth is primarily attributed to the proliferation of gigafactories engaged in advanced cell manufacturing for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems. Hindalco has already achieved a technological breakthrough in producing high-quality battery foils at its Mouda unit.

The unit is currently undergoing qualification processes with lithium-ion cell manufacturers in India, Europe, and the United States. The establishment of the new unit in Odisha is expected to enhance the company’s capability to supply materials to gigafactories worldwide. As reported by businessline, high performance aluminium foils serve as current collectors for cathode materials in the production of cells, playing a crucial role in the manufacturing of lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries.
