Reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable mining, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, an integrated zinc producer, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) to undertake a landmark ecological restoration project in Rajasthan.

Transforming Industrial Land into a Thriving Ecosystem

The ambitious 250-hectare project will be developed at Hindustan Zinc’s Chanderiya Lead Zinc Smelter Complex in Chittorgarh district. Once completed, it is expected to become one of the largest green cover developments within an industrial premises anywhere in the world. Through the initiative, the company aims to transform industrial land into a self-sustaining ecosystem that promotes biodiversity, strengthens climate resilience, and delivers long-term environmental benefits.

Science-Driven Ecological Restoration

Hindustan Zinc will implement a scientifically designed ecological restoration model to revive and enhance the site’s natural environment. The project will focus on plantation of native tree, shrub, herb, and grass species, biodiversity conservation and habitat enhancement, management and removal of invasive plant species, restoration of water bodies and aquatic ecosystems, and long-term ecological monitoring, maintenance, and impact assessment. By integrating these measures, the initiative seeks to create a resilient ecological landscape that supports local flora and fauna while improving environmental quality across the region.

TERI to Provide Scientific and Technical Expertise

As a leading research institution in sustainability and environmental management, TERI will play a pivotal role in the project’s execution. The institute will provide scientific guidance, ecological planning, species selection, restoration strategies, and implementation support throughout the project lifecycle. The collaboration combines Hindustan Zinc’s sustainability ambitions with TERI’s expertise in ecosystem restoration, ensuring that the project delivers measurable ecological outcomes.

Advancing Sustainable Mining Practices

Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc, highlighted the company’s long-term commitment to sustainability and biodiversity conservation. “Our partnership with TERI reflects our commitment to transforming industrial land into resilient green ecosystems that support native biodiversity and ecological restoration. As the first Indian company to join the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), we continue to align with global benchmarks in sustainable mining.”

Supporting Sustainability Goal 2030

The ecological restoration project forms a key part of Hindustan Zinc’s Sustainability Goal 2030 strategy. Through the initiative, the company aims to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, create measurable environmental value, and progress towards achieving a net positive impact on nature. As reported by psuconnect.in, the project underscores the company’s broader vision of integrating environmental responsibility into industrial operations while setting new benchmarks for sustainable development in the mining and metals sector.
