India and Russia are strengthening cooperation in rare earths processing and critical minerals development as global competition for strategic resources intensifies. The latest developments come as India simultaneously expands critical mineral partnerships with Quad nations to enhance long-term supply chain security.

India-Russia Partnership Focuses on Rare Earth Processing

Russia’s JSC Giredmet, a scientific division of nuclear major Rosatom, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nexon Geochem Pvt Ltd. The agreement aims to jointly develop technologies for the deep processing of raw materials containing rare earth and rare metals. The collaboration is expected to strengthen technological capabilities across the critical minerals value chain while supporting future industrial applications.

Collaboration to Cover High-Purity Metals and Advanced Materials

Under the partnership, both companies will work on full-cycle projects involving the production of high-purity rare earth metals and compounds. In addition, the collaboration will focus on manufacturing advanced materials used in sectors such as electronics, chemical processing, nuclear technologies and advanced manufacturing. Industry experts believe the initiative could help improve processing capabilities and reduce supply chain vulnerabilities in strategic mineral sectors.

Joint Research Planned for Rare Earth Magnet Technologies

JSC Giredmet also signed a letter of intent with Technology Innovation in Exploration & Mining Foundation (TEXMiN), which operates under Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines) (IIT-ISM). The proposed collaboration will support research and development in rare earth permanent magnet technologies, particularly neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets. The initiative will include pilot-scale validation activities as well as development of the complete metallurgical cycle for Giredmet’s rare earth technologies.

Global Critical Minerals Race Accelerates

The India-Russia collaboration comes amid rapidly rising global demand for critical minerals driven by the growth of clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, electronics and advanced industrial manufacturing. At the same time, governments worldwide are increasingly seeking to diversify supply chains and reduce dependence on limited processing hubs concentrated in specific regions.

As reported by businessworld.in, the partnerships focused on rare earth processing and advanced materials could play a vital role in strengthening long-term industrial cooperation and improving mineral security for future technologies. As global competition for critical minerals intensifies, India continues expanding strategic partnerships to support its clean energy transition, advanced manufacturing ambitions and long-term industrial resilience.
