India Calls for United Global Action on Energy Security at COP30 in Brazil

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, called for stronger global cooperation on clean energy and resilience while addressing the High-Level Ministerial Leadership Session of the ISA SIDS Platform at COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Held under the theme “Uniting Islands, Inspiring Action – Leadership for Energy Security”, the session brought together ministers and senior representatives from Small Island Developing States (SIDS), International Solar Alliance (ISA) members, and partner organisations to accelerate joint action on energy security, affordability, and climate resilience.

SIDS Face Unique Energy and Climate Vulnerabilities

The discussions highlighted the severe challenges faced by SIDS. These include dependence on imported fossil fuels, climate disruptions, and weak infrastructure. The Ministry noted that the ISA SIDS Platform aims to build a transformative digital and financial ecosystem that accelerates solar adoption through:

*Standardised procurement

*Blended finance

*Local capacity building

*Easier access to solar technologies

These interventions are designed to strengthen energy systems and reduce vulnerability to external shocks.

India Reaffirms Strong Support for SIDS

In his address, Yadav underscored India’s commitment to helping SIDS adopt clean and affordable energy pathways through ISA-led initiatives. Highlighting India’s rapid progress, he stated, “India has crossed 500 gigawatts of installed electricity capacity, and more than half of it is clean energy.”

India achieved 50% non-fossil energy capacity five years ahead of its NDC target, reflecting the nation’s commitment to climate action. The minister added that India is now the world’s 4th largest renewable energy producer and 3rd in solar power, crediting this growth to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on scale, speed, and public participation.

Grassroots Solar Success Stories Showcase Impact

To illustrate solar’s transformative power, Yadav shared stories from the PM Surya Ghar Rooftop Solar Programme. He described how a school teacher’s life changed after installing rooftop solar—moving from fearing monthly electricity bills to welcoming every sunny day as a source of income. With over 20 lakh families adopting rooftop solar systems, the Minister called it “freedom for every household” and “a mini power plant on every roof.”

Solar for Agriculture: A New Dawn for Farmers

The Minister highlighted the growing impact of solar in India’s agriculture sector.
Solar pumps and solarised feeders are providing farmers with dependable, daytime power—eliminating diesel costs and reducing stress. According to Yadav, this shift is “a new dawn for our farmer community. Now, they work with the sun and sleep with peace.” He also mentioned India’s major push in energy storage and showcased landmark projects, including a large solar-plus-battery system in Ladakh capable of powering an entire city.

Strengthening Global Solar Cooperation Through ISA

Yadav reaffirmed India’s ongoing commitment to the International Solar Alliance. Describing ISA as a “Global Solar Family,” he highlighted its 124+ member countries, spanning from Pacific islands to African savannas and South American highlands. ISA continues to support project design and mobilise finance. It also creates local jobs and promotes solar as the preferred option for clean, reliable electricity.

A Call for Shared Global Action

The Minister urged countries to unite in strengthening global energy security. He reflected on the broader significance of solar energy, stating, “Solar energy is spreading its light in more than technological ways. It is Hope, Empowerment and Independence. It is Dignity and Peace.” As reported by devdiscourse.com, India’s call for collective action at COP30 reinforces the global need for cooperation and innovation. It also emphasizes shared responsibility to build a secure and resilient clean energy future.
