India will integrate Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) into its coal gasification and industrial hubs, reinforcing coal’s contribution to the country’s net zero transition, Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy announced.

“We are integrating Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage into gasification and industrial hubs, paving the way for coal’s role in India’s Net Zero transition,” Reddy said. He highlighted that India is advancing coal-to-chemicals, hydrogen, methanol, and syngas initiatives to diversify coal usage and reduce dependence on imports.

Coal Gasification Mission Targets 100 Million Tons

The Coal Gasification Mission aims to achieve 100 million tons by 2030, backed by an ₹8,500 crore incentive scheme. Currently, seven projects under this mission are already under implementation, signaling strong momentum in scaling domestic coal-to-chemical technologies.

Investment and Technology Support Crucial for Energy Transition

Reddy emphasized that India’s energy transition requires significant investment. He noted that CCUS, large-scale land reclamation, renewable integration, and workforce reskilling all require concessional finance and technology support. To achieve this, the government is pursuing collaboration with industry partners and multilateral agencies to scale these initiatives effectively.

Vision for 2047: Reclaimed Land and Renewable Growth

Looking ahead, the minister outlined a long-term vision for India’s coalfields. By 2047, marking 100 years of independence, India plans to:

*Reclaim over one lakh hectares of mined-out land,

*Develop eco-tourism hubs across coalfield regions, and

*Add substantial renewable energy capacity to the energy mix.

As reported by etenergyworld.com, through CCUS integration, diversification of coal usage, and sustainable land management, India aims to balance energy security with environmental sustainability, reinforcing its commitment to net zero targets while supporting industrial growth.
