Karnataka is placing Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the centre of its future development strategy. During the inauguration of Google I/O Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced that the state will establish India’s first government-backed AI University. The initiative aims to create a strong ecosystem for AI education, research and innovation, while positioning Karnataka as a national leader in artificial intelligence.
AI University to Develop Talent and Research
The proposed university will focus on developing world-class AI talent, promoting advanced AI research, encouraging collaboration between academia, industry and government and supporting innovation in emerging AI technologies. In addition, the state will set up an AI Hub that will function as an incubation and collaboration centre for startups, researchers, companies and academic institutions working in artificial intelligence.
Karnataka’s Vision: Becoming an AI-Native State
Shivakumar emphasized that Karnataka wants to become an “AI-native State”. Rather than treating AI as a standalone technology, the government plans to integrate it into everyday governance and public services. As a result, AI will be applied across multiple sectors to improve efficiency, accessibility and service delivery.
The government plans to use AI in several key areas: Education, AI-assisted learning, AI-assisted teaching and personalized learning support, Healthcare, Early diagnosis, Early diagnosis and improved medical assistance, Agriculture, Smart advisory, AI-based advisory services for farmers, Citizen Services, Faster delivery, Faster and more responsive government service delivery, Small Businesses, AI-powered tools and AI-powered solutions to enhance productivity and competitiveness. These initiatives will help improve both governance and economic growth across the state.
Expanding Digital Infrastructure for AI
To support its AI ambitions, the Karnataka government plans to strengthen digital infrastructure by investing in new data centres, cloud computing infrastructure, high-performance computing capabilities and next-generation digital technologies. These investments will provide the computing power and storage capacity needed for large-scale AI applications and research.
Karnataka’s AI Roadmap
With the launch of a government-backed AI University, the creation of an AI Hub and major investments in digital infrastructure, Karnataka is taking a comprehensive approach to artificial intelligence. The state aims not only to produce skilled AI professionals but also to integrate AI into governance, healthcare, education, agriculture and business operations. As reported by indiatoday.in, if implemented successfully, these initiatives could position Karnataka as India’s leading AI innovation and research destination and establish a model for AI-driven public administration across the country.
