L&T Energy GreenTech (LTEG), a wholly owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro Ltd., has entered into a strategic agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation. The partnership aims to develop and commercialize a green ammonia project in Gujarat.
Joint Development Agreement for 300 KTPA Facility
LTEG and ITOCHU will collaborate to establish a 300 KTPA green ammonia plant at Kandla, Gujarat. ITOCHU plans to offtake the ammonia for bunkering applications in Singapore. This will position the facility as a key production hub for the company’s low-carbon maritime fuel operations. Hiroyuki Tsubai, President of ITOCHU Corporation’s Machinery Company, emphasized, “With this collaboration, Kandla will become the principal production centre of green ammonia for ITOCHU’s bunkering operations in Singapore.”
Strengthening India-Japan Green Energy Partnership
Through the joint initiative with L&T, one of India’s largest and most respected private-sector companies, ITOCHU aims to accelerate progress. It seeks to introduce zero-emission ammonia. This will serve as a cleaner alternative fuel for the maritime sector. “The partnership with ITOCHU reflects L&T’s broader vision of enabling a cleaner, greener future through sustainable business practices,” said Subramanian Sarma, Deputy MD & President of L&T.
L&T Expands Green Energy Footprint
In 2024, L&T acquired a substantial land parcel at Kandla to support its green hydrogen and ammonia projects. The agreement strengthens the company’s strategy to establish a comprehensive presence across the green energy value chain. As reported by msn.com, India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission targets a production capacity of at least 5 MMTPA by 2030. It is expected to attract investments exceeding USD 100 billion, highlighting the growing momentum for low-carbon fuel initiatives in the country.
