The ministry of power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) recently announced a significant update to the Energy Conservation Act of 2001, introducing ambitious renewable energy consumption goals. As per the update, BEE will take on the responsibility of managing and reporting data related to renewable energy usage by designated consumers to the government.

Starting from April 2024, the primary focus will be on energy generated from wind power projects initiated after March 31, 2024, as well as energy from hydro power projects, including pump storage and small hydro projects established after this date. Additionally, the government may potentially approve the sourcing of energy from international hydro renewable projects.

As reported by ETEnergyworld.com, the notification emphasises that energy from renewable projects with a capacity below 10 MW, which encompasses various solar installations, will also be included in these targets. This mandate extends to specified consumers, regardless of whether they are involved in open access or operate captive power plants, even if their energy sources are not fossil-based. These changes signal a reaffirmation of the Indian government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy consumption and ensuring a sustainable future for the nation.
