Oil India Limited (OIL) successfully discovered a new gas-bearing sand in the Dandewala Field located in the Jaisalmer district. The company achieved natural gas flow for the first time from the shallower Sanu Formation in the Dandewala gas field, with estimated production of nearly 25,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMD). Significantly, the newly discovered gas contains lower levels of carbon dioxide, making it comparatively better in quality.
Major Milestone for India’s Energy Security
The breakthrough is a significant milestone in India’s mission to enhance domestic energy production and reduce dependence on imported fuel resources. The breakthrough marks an important advancement for the country’s hydrocarbon exploration efforts.
Rajasthan Strengthens Its Position as an Energy Hub
The discovery is being viewed as a key development for the hydrocarbon sector in western Rajasthan, a region that has steadily emerged as an important energy hub over the past several years. Energy experts believe that unlocking the new gas-bearing zone could accelerate further exploration and production activities across the desert state. Experts noted that increasing domestic natural gas production will help India meet its rising energy demand while also supporting cleaner fuel initiatives and reducing import dependence.
Advanced Exploration Efforts Lead to Success
According to company officials, engineers and geoscientists at OIL carried out extensive studies and evaluations to assess the hydrocarbon potential of the region before successfully achieving gas flow. Industry observers believe the latest breakthrough may open new opportunities for additional exploration in adjoining areas of the Jaisalmer Basin, further strengthening Rajasthan’s role in India’s oil and gas landscape. As reported by msn.com, Rajasthan already plays a crucial role in India’s hydrocarbon sector, with several major oil and gas projects operating across the state’s desert districts. The latest discovery has been widely welcomed by the energy industry as a positive step toward enhancing India’s domestic production capabilities.
